Word by Mr Farooq Mehboob
I have been a practicing engineer for 56 years, I started with the local distributor of an HVAC manufacturer in Dhaka and a few years later I joined Intercontinental Hotels where I served as Regional Chief Engineer for Middle East and Central Asia until I set up my consulting practice in 1980.
ASHRAE has been a passion for me for the last 40 years. I have had the honor and the privilege of founding the first ASHRAE chapter in Pakistan and helping deliver the other three. I love the Region at large with its mosaic of cultures and ethnicity spread over three continents.
I joined ASHRAE for its technology which helped me enormously in my professional career, I realized as I got involved Chapters, Regions and Society that I had such a wonderful opportunity to make friends all across the world and widen my professional circle and this was only possible because I was engaged and participated in ASHRAE Chapter,Region and Society activities.
More than ever HVAC engineers need to be involved with ASHRAE, the fourth industrial revolution is upon us and artificial intelligence AI, Big Data and IOT are the emerging technologies, these technologies will spawn new technologies pertaining to the construction, operation and control of buildings. We are already seeing the widespread integration of renewable power in buildings. Energy efficiency will be a key driver both in construction technology and HVAC technology.
I urge young engineers to drink at the fountain of ASHRAE technology to take full advantage of the digital revolution, develop professionally and join the worldwide ASHRAE community net work. All this is possible if you participate in Chapter, Region and Society activities, especially the technology side of ASHRAE by joining technical committees doing research.
One of the things that the HVAC industry suffers from around the world is a low industry profile, we need to raise the profile of our industry by espousing issues of public concern and address them as we have so successfully done with our Epidemic Task Force thus raising our profile. This will help attract more talent into our industry and make policy makers take notice. We also need is to the espouse diversity, equity and inclusiveness as a Society this will bring myriad advantages and unleash creativity while growing the pool of talent in our industry. Raising our Profile and Diversity are the key elements of my vision for ASHRAE.
I urge you to join ASHRAE in achieving our vision of “ A healthy and sustainable built environment for all.”
